Vera Wang started her design salon in 1990 at the Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue in New York City to be exact, specializing in bridal gowns in New York. Her label quickly took off, gaining praise from the fashion elite for its exquisite detailing, luxurious fabrics, and modern twist on classic lines.
She created stunning iconic wedding gowns for Mariah Carey, Sharon Stone, Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys, and many others. So when Ivanka Trump wanted to do a wedding dress with her, it was equally iconic. It also steered away from the pomp and glam of the sleeveless, strapless wedding dress and other more popular and celebrity-infused looks.
Vera designed her a short-sleeved, closed-neck illusion lace top with a sweetheart neckline and a low backline inside, decorated with bridal flower motifs. The very curvy bodice has a sexy tapered waistline followed by an A-line skirt made with 3 layers of bridal lace fabrics. A Watteau veil and Cathedral train complete this beautiful, timeless gown.
Ivanka loved American icon Grace Kelly’s wedding dress design, as Vera pointed out two important points: the lovely lace and the royal factor. These were the influences that Ivanka also wanted.
Speaking with The New York Times, Vera recalled the positive experience with creating the dress, saying, “It’s modest and tasteful. She was actually very much about being covered, and I seized on the chance to do a dress that wasn’t naked and very Hollywood.”
Vera’s out-of-the-box treatment and experienced, clever design produced an iconic and elegant dress. Its simple elegance and strong features made Ivanka unique and different from most brides.
Ivanka wore jewelry inspired by Art Deco from her own jewelry collection. This consisted of a platinum-diamond bracelet, platinum mixed-cut diamond earrings, and a platinum-diamond hairpiece. This last key piece as an important addition to her veilwhich was added to her veil.
How Much Was Ivanka’s Dress?
The Wedding Scoop wedding dress experts estimate that Ivanka’s dress cost around $50,000 or more.
This custom-crafted design from Vera Wang, with inspiration from Grace Kelly’s wedding gown, was a fashionable combination. Ivanka’s lace A-line wedding dress was demure, romantic, and majestic. The intricate design consisted of sheer lace sleeves and three different tiers of hand-appliquéd lace colored with various shades of ivory.
According to Vera, the gown used three different kinds of lace, including Chantilly and Lyon. It has an embroidered bottom layer, with each layer handcrafted by hand, which creates wonderful layers of lace. “You could see the layers underneath when she moved.” Vera created Ivanka’s wedding gown within a month.
However, there were no other details available on what shoes Ivanka wore.
Asked by the publication if Vera thinks Ivanka will influence future brides with a nontrendy and tried-and-true classic wedding fashion, she replied, “She might very. Nothing would make me happier. I’ve been doing strapless dresses for 15 years. It’s tiring.”
As a cute wedding gift, all the guests received white flip-flops with ‘Jared and Ivanka’ written on the insoles and a tag with the words, ‘A Great Pair.’ Don’t you just love it!
Ivanka and Jared: The Lovely Power Couple
Ivanka and Jared first met in 2007 at a business lunch set up by friends. She told in her Vogue interview, “They very innocently set us up thinking that our only interest in one another would be transactional. Whenever we see them, we’re like, ‘The best deal we ever made!’”
Before the couple got engaged, they broke up briefly because of religious differences. Jared’s family is Orthodox Jewish, and religion is important to him. The couple reunited when Ivanka converted to Judaism to be with Jared.
In 2009, Jared proposed to Ivanka with a 5.22-carat diamond ring, setting up their elegant wedding.
