Royal couple Prince Harry and Princess Meghan married at Westminster Abbey on May 19, 2019, with more than 29 million viewers around the world adoring their historic wedding. Megan Markle’s wedding dress was immaculate, her beautiful wedding garb fit for a British princess.
The Wedding Scoop discusses this much-celebrated wedding dress and the love story of one of the most recognized power couples in the world!
Megan Markle’s Wedding Dress: A Royal Work of Art
Meghan Markle wore an original Clare Waight Keller for this momentous royal occasion. Known as Givenchy’s first female art director, the British fashion designer crafted simple elegance and royal distinction in this wonderful dress.
The wedding dress used matte silk fabric with no lace or bridal motifs, achieving a seamless and clean look. It featured a wide, boat-neckline top with long tapered 3/4ths sleeves. Clare and her team used 100 yards of white silk, and 25 yards of taffeta for this royal piece.
The slight, modest curves on the bodice, hips, and waist went beautifully with an A-Line skirt and its floor hemline. It’s not form-fitting, allowing a comfortable fit. Then, the Watteau veil-train made of silk and organza, with floral bridal motifs on its hem combined gracefully with the skirt’s 16-foot Royal train.
Meghan collaborated closely with the famed designer, achieving the simple, minimalist, yet royal-elegant look.
Speaking with People, she offered insight into their collaboration, “She is just exactly what you see on TV. She is just so genuine and warm and radiant. She is just glowing. And she’s a strong woman. She knows what she wants. Really, it was an absolute joy working with her.”
The dress cost close to $300,000.
To complete her royal look, Queen Elizabeth II loaned her Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara. Her majesty also gifted her a wedding ring made of Welsh gold. Royal brides, by tradition, wear a wedding ring exclusively from Cleave and Company.
Meghan’s Wedding Reception Dress
The Duchess also had a second designer dress made for her wedding reception. For this, she commissioned British designer Stella McCartney.
The reception dress was also minimalist in style, but sexier in composition. It featured a closed-neck halter top with a relaxed fit and a seamless flow, ending with a floor hemline and sweep train.
Stella is the daughter of the Beatles’ Paul McCartney and his wife, photographer and activist Linda McCartney (also with Paul in Wings). She owns her self-named vegan clothing brand.
This Stella McCartney wedding reception dress costs around $160,000.
Meghan and Harry’s Adorable Love Story
Before Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and Princess Meghan, Meghan Markle was in the legal drama series, Suits, from 2011 to 2018. Meghan also ran the lifestyle blog, The Tig, from 2014 to 2017. She also worked as a freelance calligrapher and bookbinding instructor.
Her experiences in TV and media led her to women’s issues and social justice work later on.
A mutual friend set up Meghan and Harry on a blind date at Soho House in July 2016. They also connected through Instagram.
Harry fell in love with her. Meghan also charmed the Prince when he found out she knew very little about the Royal Family and was an activist for women’s and human rights. The press and paparazzi hounded the couple, even spreading fake news and comments about her, which Harry addressed through his communications.
The couple appeared in public for the first time in September 2017, at the Toronto, Canada Invictus Games, which Prince Harry is a patron. She also met King Charles, and later the King himself announced their engagement on November 27, 2017.
The Royal family members met and welcomed her into the family. Meghan went on a romantic vacation with him in Norway and attended his hubby’s polo matches. They also attended Pippa Middleton’s wedding reception in 2017.
Meghan has the distinction of being the first American and biracial spouse of Royalty since Princess Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, and wife to Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, in 1937.
The Royal Proposal
Prince Harry proposed to Megan on November 4, 2017.
The couple was in their cottage kitchen, and Meghan was preparing to roast a chicken. Harry surprised her and got down on one knee to present her with a beautiful engagement ring.
It featured a 3-carat cushion-cut diamond from Botswana, where they first dated abroad and became closer. It’s 2 side stones belonged to Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana, at .8 carats each, crafted by Cleave & Company on a yellow gold band.
