Planning a wedding this year? I totally get the mix of excitement, nerves, and “Where do we even start?” moments—because I’ve been there myself, not just as a guest, but as someone who’s helped family and friends tie the knot. From last-minute dress fixes to emotional toasts and chaotic seating plans, I’ve seen (and survived) it all. That’s why I wanted to share some real, heartfelt advice—things I wish I knew earlier and tips that truly made the big day smoother and more meaningful. Let’s dive in, friend to friend.

Something About The Author

Hi, I’m Jessa—and while I’m not a professional wedding planner, I’ve been the go-to girl for so many weddings in my circle, whether as a family member, friend, or trusted extra pair of hands. I’ve helped with everything from last-minute errands to calming pre-wedding jitters, and I’ve seen firsthand what works (and what doesn’t). That’s why I wanted to share some honest, simple advice for couples getting married this year—because sometimes, the most helpful tips come from someone who’s been right there in the middle of it all.

So without further ado, let’s start!

1. Start Early – Like, Now!

I cannot stress this enough: don’t wait. Venues, photographers, caterers—everything books up so fast these days. I remember when my cousin was getting married, they started looking for a venue just six months before the wedding, and let me tell you—panic mode! Most places were already full. So even if your wedding is still a few months away, it’s better to book things early than regret it later.

2. Set a Real Budget—and Stick to It

Weddings can get expensive real quick. Before you get carried away with flower walls or renting a live peacock (yes, it happens), sit down and talk money. Set a clear budget that includes everything—dress, food, décor, even tips for vendors.

One of my closest friends had a beautiful wedding, but she went over her budget because of last-minute changes. Trust me, financial stress should not be part of your honeymoon.

3. Your Wedding, Your Rules

via GIPHY

There’s always that one tita or uncle with too many opinions. “Why not invite your second cousin’s dentist’s wife?” or “You should wear red, not white!” 🙄 Remember: it’s your day. It should reflect you and your partner’s style and personality. Be polite, but stand your ground.

When my sister got married, people had so many comments, but in the end, she chose a simple garden wedding, and it was magical—because it was her dream, not anyone else’s.

4. Think About the Guests—but Don’t Lose Yourself

via GIPHY

Of course, you want your guests to feel comfortable. Good food, clean restrooms, and a nice flow of events go a long way. I once went to a wedding that started three hours late and had no snacks—our stomachs were louder than the band. 😂

So yes, plan for your guests’ comfort—but don’t forget to plan for you too! Include small details that make you happy, whether it’s a song you love or your favorite dessert at the reception.

5. Do a Hair and Makeup Trial

via GIPHY

Please, don’t skip this. I attended a wedding where the bride didn’t do a makeup trial—and let’s just say, the look was not what she expected. Do a trial a few weeks before your big day so you can see how it looks in photos and under different lighting. You’ll feel more relaxed knowing there are no surprises.

6. Take Pre-Marriage Counseling Seriously

via GIPHY

Even if you think you know everything about each other, premarital counseling helps you talk about the serious stuff: money, kids, conflict, goals. It’s not boring—I actually found it super helpful when I attended a few sessions with my partner before we even started planning anything. It opens up conversations that you might not even realize are important.

7. Don’t Obsess Over Perfection

via GIPHY

Not everything will go exactly as planned—and that’s okay. The weather might change, someone might be late, or the sound system might glitch. At my cousin’s wedding, the ring bearer (a 3-year-old!) ran away mid-aisle. We all laughed, and honestly, it became a memory we still talk about.

Focus on the love, not the little flaws.

8. Make Time for Just the Two of You

via GIPHY

On your wedding day, everyone will want a piece of you—photos here, hugs there. Schedule a few quiet minutes alone with your partner, maybe after the ceremony or during dinner. Just breathe, hold hands, and take it all in.

I saw a couple sneak away to the side of the reception area, sharing a quiet moment while the guests were busy with games. It was beautiful and reminded me what the day was truly about—them.

9. Assign a ‘Point Person’ for the Day

via GIPHY

You do not want to be the one answering calls about the caterer or DJ on your big day. Pick a trusted friend or sibling and give them the master list of vendors and schedules. That way, you can just relax and enjoy the day. When I helped with my best friend’s wedding, I became the unofficial “bride bodyguard”—it helped her stay calm, and I felt honored to support her like that.

10. Take Lots of Photos—but Be Present

via GIPHY

Photos are great for memories, but don’t forget to be in the moment too. Walk slowly down the aisle. Look into your partner’s eyes. Dance like no one’s watching. Hug your family. Laugh with your friends. These are the moments that make the day unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

Weddings are beautiful, but they can also be overwhelming. Just remember why you’re doing this: because you found your person. Everything else is just glitter.

Whether you’re the chill type or the detailed planner, I hope these tips help make your special day smoother, more meaningful, and full of joy. I’ve seen the tears, the stress, the laughter, and the love—and trust me, it’s all worth it in the end.

So breathe, enjoy, and say “I do” with your whole heart. 💕

From someone who’s cried at almost every wedding (yes, including yours soon!),
— Jessa
