What are Old Mine Cut Diamonds?
Old mine cut diamonds are vintage cut diamonds made pre-1900, featuring Edwardian and Victorian-era diamond cuts. These 1800s to early 1900s era types of vintage diamond cutting techniques involved fewer cuts and facets. The facets are larger and simpler in design, creating a distinct look and light reflection properties.
There are two main types of these older diamond cuts. Old Mine Cut (OMB) and Old European Cut (OEC) diamonds.
An OMC diamond has a squarish or cushion-cut shape. They are often chunky with slight, irregular shapes. These diamonds are from an even older era, the Georgian and Victorian jewelry styles of the 1700s–1860s.
An OEC diamond is round and more symmetrical in its cutting and composition. It is the precursor to the modern era, with more precise cutwork and facets. The eras involved in their styles and influences are the Edwardian and Art Deco eras, the 1890s to 1930s.
