Mine is Kate Middleton’s wedding dress hehe
I’m intrigued by the fabrics and gemstones used in these dresses. How do designers source such rare and luxurious materials?
Hi Jes!
Designers source rare and luxurious materials like exclusive fabrics and gemstones through a combination of high-end suppliers, bespoke artisans, and direct collaborations with manufacturers. Many high-fashion houses maintain long-term relationships with textile producers and gem merchants to secure unique, top-quality materials.
My wedding was in June of 1969. I had $60 to spend. A friend made my dress. We chose peau de soie fabric and adapted the pattern so the train would look like the one I would have bought it I could have. My friend went to the shop on a Sunday morning and drew a sketch of the one in the window. White with lace sleeves. Train was 8 feet long, attached at the waist. It was a rectangle of the dress material, 8″ of lace and then peau de soie again in the center. It was completed all the way around and pleated where it attached to the dress so I could take the stitching out and use it for a table cloth at our 25th wedding anniversary (and also at our daughter’s wedding.) I sewed all the pearls on by hand (several hundred if I remember right.) We will celebrate our 57th anniversary in 2026. It would not make your list – but it was spectacular to me! =)
