A rare 10.03-carat fancy vivid blue diamond is set to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s. Named “The Mediterranean Blue,”. This exquisite gem will make its auction debut at Sotheby’s High Jewelry sale in Geneva on May 13. With an estimated price of approximately CHF 18 million ($20 million).
Classified as a Type IIb diamond. It holds the highest possible color grade for a blue diamond. Fancy vivid blue as determined by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). According to the GIA, only 0.3% of all diamonds submitted annually exhibit a predominantly blue hue. And, among those, very few achieve the fancy, vivid grade while exceeding 10 carats.

According to Sotheby’s, its carefully crafted shape enhances its rich saturation, elevating it to a “rarefied category” even among the world’s most exceptional diamonds. Unlike other fancy-colored diamonds, which usually get their color from impurities like nitrogen, blue diamonds owe their unique color to boron.
